Our Story
‘City of Sails Marine Brokers’ was established by the late John Colebrook, and Blair and partner Janis bought the business around 2007, building it steadily since then. With our emphasis on service and success, we have many repeat clients – and we plan to continue that philosophy to bring buyers and sellers together to bring boating satisfaction to both.
Every one of the team here is an experienced boat owner and sailor, and each of us has done our time on the water – and on the hard. But most of all, we’re passionate – there’s that word again – about being on the water, enjoying and caring for the marine environment, and making sure it’s pleasurable and safe.
Since we first started our business in mid-2000 there have been some fundamental changes in the boating scene, and it’s been important to be aware of them, to adapt to them, and to bring those changes to the way we do business and to adapt to our client’s needs.
One of the most influential early changes has been in the way that New Zealanders do their boating, particularly their yachting. Young family members who might previously come yacht racing or cruising with mum and dad now prefer team sports on land. And before Covid, the young ones headed for their OE, leaving mum and dad with a boat that was not well set up for a keen couple.
So, this led to the need for well-equipped cruising boats, easily handled, easy access to the swimming ladder, and more of the comforts of home.
The next event was the arrival of Covid, which turned the boating world upside down. With almost everyone having to stay in NZ, where to go for leisure and pleasure? Boating of course. It created even more demand for the type of boat mentioned above, but now there more younger buyers with younger crew ready to come aboard for the weekend – and with the grandchildren!
This has led to a buoyant market over the past two years – and a shortage of new listings!
When and if the dangers of the current pandemic recede, there may be another round of significant changes on the New Zealand boating scene. Here at ‘City of Sails Marine’, we’re keeping a weather eye out. And when it comes to meeting the challenge of change, we’ll be here to help.
