As part of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s 150th celebrations the club has initiated a ‘legacy’ project to replant forest area on a part of Kawau Island.

The plan includes pest control, land clearing, installation of walking tracks and replanting of native trees, mostly around the iconic Kawau Boating Club and Lidgard House.

It’s a great effort to contribute to the longevity of the environment and native bird life that RNZYS members, Kawau Island residents and visiting boaties can use and enjoy. This is a long-term project in which the RNZYS hopes to plant 12,000 trees from large specimen trees to small undercover plants and restore the bush and native birdlife. Funds raised from members and the club’s Corporate Regatta will go towards the project.

The club’s efforts put to shame the DOC’s approach to the equally iconic Mansion House and surroundings, across the harbour from the boat club. The area is host to huge exotic pines which prevent the regrowth of native species, and they regularly fall down the cliffs and drag a root ball of clay into the water, staining it an ugly yellow. There doesn’t seem to be any management plan.

Come on DOC, do your thing.
